When is it worth replacing a blade?
On a saw blade
If the saw is noticeably slower, takes more effort for the same branch, or the edges of the kerf are ragged, the teeth have worn.
On a pruning shear blade
If the cut is no longer clean, the branch tears or gets pinched, and sharpening no longer helps. A crushed cut face is not just a cosmetic issue: it is an open door to fungal infection, so it matters for the health of the plant too.
Important: impulse-hardened teeth cannot be sharpened
Several ARS saws have impulse-hardened teeth, which extends edge life several times over. The trade-off is that these teeth cannot be re-sharpened, because the hardened layer is very thin. On those models, replacing the blade is the correct answer when the teeth wear, not filing them. On those models, replacing the blade is the economical answer when the teeth wear. Saws without impulse-hardened teeth can be filed with the ARS 9F-10, and for pruning shear blades you need a diamond sharpener from the sharpening category.
